I'm allergic to coffee and anything with coffee in it like tiramisu so I never buy coffee ............... but aren't those Starbuck's prices high?

I think they made a good choice going to Milano over Roma where they would not find it so novel. I love my coffee stronger than most Italian outlets. So you can imagine how hard I find it buying anything like coffee in the UK. Saying that, most I know (Brits that is) prefer "Americano" or dare I say it instant!

I admit I find it astounding an Italian would want Starbucks coffee as it is served in America. It seems to me it is the experience, the novelty or image that brings people in. Considering what passes for coffee in America let alone much of Northumberland,I certainly miss how coffee is roasted and served in Italy.

I think it will do well initially - Italians are drawn to things shiny and new. But its vast - they must be running it as a loss leader becasue the rent must be astronomical. I cant see Italians wanting a litre of burnt milk with caramel topping as a coffee. The tourists will go.

An article I saw mentioned lots of cocktails and snacks too so it might become the new "in" place to have an aperitivo and not just coffee.

Espresso €1.80
Marocchino (stupid invention anyway) €3.50
Caffè americano (coffee-flavoured water) €4.50
Cappuccino €4.50-5.50 (!!!)
Latte macchiato ditto (will they tell us it has to be pronounced "lartay" as in the UK?)
And the list of idiotic inventions continues at exorbitant prices... and yet people are queuing for 2 hours to get in! Perhaps Starbucks market research people have got it right, at least as far as Milanese fighetti are concerned...

On a similar note, I was interested to read that the founders of Costa Coffee came from Parma.

seems its working in MILAN! packed daily! with LOCALS! and tourists! and it opened right after summer last year.. so this spring and summer it will be PACKED daily!
no cafes in italy can handle crowds like starbucks can, the amount of beverages etc..
they plan on opening in rome and florence this year too, which will also do VERY well..
I think most american franchises will be successful in italy..
young people are dying for change!!!
its old romantics who dont like change in italy!

What's next, importing Chef Boyardee tinned pasta monstrosities and the advocates of change no matter what the cost to value and taste will flock to it
