The BBC did report that the menus and price lists were correctly displayed in full view and that the tourists were given a pefectly valid receipt so maybe they should have looked carefully at the prices before ordering ? It seems that these were not just ordinary cones .

I get so pissed off at hearing these stupid 'rip off' complaints from stupid Brit tourists. Just returned from Rome myself. Took a group from our local Centro Anziani for the Papal Audience. We had a whale of a time, including ice creams at Fontana do Trevi. Huge ones @ €3 each.
The choice started from €1.50

So a big icecream costs 3 euro, how come the shop made a menu with an icecream that costs 16 euro each? Maybe it was sprinkled with real gold dust.

It's Piazza di Spagna. Any person with common sense should avoid buying anything there and in immediate vicinity.

exactly - as far as Rome is concerned I always say if you see anything famous from a bar/restaurant then don't buy there!

Yes very true Hadenough - I remember being told if you ask the price beforehand and still take a gondola ride - you didn't properly understand the answer.

So true! However my partner had one 3 or 4 years ago (and it was 15 euros then so not a great deal of inflation to be fair). It was enormous and nicely decorated- given the location it was well worth it. The shop was jam-packed with customers who were quite happy to pay the high prices, it would be Brits who whinge.

Not a great deal of inflation? What are you talking about?
A palline at it's most expensive is 1.20 euro here. A pallina sold at 1.50 is very expensive.

Agreed, I've been to Rome many times, and never paid anywhere near that much for an ice cream.

My rule of thumb for any retailer anywhere selling anything is if the price is not clearly displayed and I have to ask, I probably can't afford it! ..... or don't want it.
