Dear Hayley,

We look forward to seeing Mike, he will have fun. Phil always puts on a good bash and makes a good curry too!

The only other name I can recollect from Vetco just now (I think he is still there) is Eurig Jones, a tall dark haired Welshman! We havent seen him in a few years now.

Enjoy your day.

I know Eurig very well - he is a sweetheart and one of the first people I met when I started here! His little boy, Emlyn, goes to nursery with my daughter Maia. He is a delight - I will tell him you said hi!! Eurig is now the Black Belt for the ITO organisation.

Such a small world!

Just called Eurig and he has said lovely things about you!! He didn't know that you guys had moved, but I said that you were happy and settled in Point Noire. He will get in touch with you via Facebook, so he can share news and photos - they have a baby daughter now called Gwen!

Dear Hayley,

Isnt it a small world!

We havent been good at keeping in touch with Eurig and family. I would love to see him on facebook (you too). What nursery do the kids go too? Does Eurig still stay at Stralloch?

Out here facebook is the best way to keep contact, especially for sending photos! The internet is available out here but its expensive and not always reliable (bit of a hit n miss!). I did manage to send a photo to our daughter 2 days ago!

The Hotel Azur has a good internet system, it has a wee internet cafe thing going on.

Look forward to hearing from you again.

It really is a small world!

The kids go to The Bridges nursery. Vetco are now in the old Occidental/Elf building across from the AECC and the nursery is behind it, so its fine and handy. Eurig and I often pass each other on the nursery run!!

I'm on FB but have no access here at work, so will hunt you down (!) tonight!

Have a great day, Fiona!

Dear Silva,

I spoke to my husband about jobs for out here. All he can recommend is that he applies for work via oil/service companies through the UK with a view to coming out here. Unfortunately they are not taking on anyone here.

However, if you want the company of english conversation, we have a book club that meets every other week or so. Its a nice group of ladies that exchange books and chat (have a glass of wine etc.) You and your mother would be welcome to join us.

Hello everyone,
There is a possibility that my husband will be offered a post in Point Noire, Congo in the next few months and wondered if you could help me with some information.

We both are from Singapore. This is our first time going to be away from family and friends.

Can you please let me know what are there for Children to do my son are 11 and my daughter is 8 years old? (i.e. good play areas, child friendly restaurants, etc). Also, what sort of entertainment is available for adults and is the shopping there any good or do we need to take supplies with us (food and clothes)!! How’s the environment (i.e. cleanliness, hygiene) security and crime?

Any International School with English syllabus in Point Noire?

Any help or advice you can give me will be gratefully received.
If you need to write to me you may email me at [email protected]

Hello Everyone,

My name is Michelle and I will be moving to Pointe Noire in the very near future! My partner has agreed to a transfer from Aberdeen to Congo and I’m coming along for the ride.

I am just looking for some advice on what life it like, and what sort of things there is for a 26 yr old female without children to do? Is there anyone out there who is in my position? Are there many job opportunities? I work for a conference & exhibition ororganizerdealing in Wound Care (basically I do admin work).

To be honest I have absolutely no idea what to expect. My other half spent 5 years in the Middle East working on a rotation, and is often in Africa for business trips, so is far more prepared. I myself have not had the same “life experiences”. Staying in a barong on a beach in Bali is about as adventurous as I get. I have been told to prepare myself for a culture shock…?

We are coming out on the 7th January and have 8 days to explore the area and get an idea of what life will be like. The other half will have a bit of work to do, but we will have the weekend to ourselves and can do some exploring. I would love if someone could recommend some activities for us to do / places to visit? Or ideally if someone would like to meet up and let me buy them a coffee and pick their brains for an hour?

Any advice will be welcomed.

From an excited, and equally terrified Michelle.

Hi Michelle,

Welcome to the world of ex pat life, trust me you'll love it.

Pointe Noire is a small but very busy place and the ex pat community is great.

From Aberdeen you have my wife (Fae Dyce), me (Fae Newmachar), Fi & Jeff (Fae Balmedie) and Andy (Fae Ellon) but there is a lot of other English speaking peeps and we all meet up most weeks.

Fi is coming home for Xmas, so I'll text her and tell her to come online and send you a message.

Mel and I have been here nearly 3 years and really like it, the biggest thing for new comers is getting a house sorted out as soon as possible, furnished houses are few and far between but there are a lot of unfurnished.

We would be more than happy to meet up with you when you come down and I know Fi would easily meet you in Aberdeen to pick her brains before you arrive.

I'll send you a message with Mel and I's phone numbers so if you wanna phone either of us before you get here that would be fine, and any questions just ask.

Tara the Noo,

Phil

Fit like Phil,

Thanks for getting in touch!

From what I’ve seen and heard Pointe Noire does seem like a nice place. Plus now I know all you guys are there, it doesn’t seem quite as daunting.

I’m actually a “weegie” but I’ve been living up here for 6 years (apparently the accent has mellowed so I should be easier to understand) and Darron is 31 and from Fraserburgh (chookter).

That would be perfect to hear from both Mel and Fiona, just to give me an idea of what to expect. It would be lovely to meet up with Fiona while she’s back, so I would appreciate you telling her about me… any excuse for a gossip.

Thank you, we will definitely take you up on your offer and meet up when we come over. I’ll be in touch nearer the time and have an idea of where we're going to be.

Yeah we’ve heard that finding a property isn’t as easy as back home. Hopefully after our trip we’ll have a better idea of these things and it will all be sorted for us moving out.

Thanks for your help and I look forward to hearing from you all.

Michelle
