It's a stunning country but it's become dehumanised and all I can say is that I cringe to think of 2010 ...:( Meanwhile if it does go ahead it looks like tickets will be easier to come by as nobody will want to put their life on the line to go to SA. Pity as I fancied going but I am not that stupid. |

Looks like FIFA haven't comlpletely satisfied themselves about security yet and it could all still change.

Where did you hear that from? I have heard a few things brewing but nothing lately. I would love to go to a WC and SA is a beautiful country but the madness that is going on over there does not attract most folk with common sense. Be interested in any news you could point me to on the topic. Cheers |

http://www.blacktalent.co.za/news-ar....php?artid=123 Rumours have circulated in the media for months that FIFA was looking for an alternative host country - possibly the United States or Germany - because of concerns that South Africa had fallen far behind in its preparations. "I've seen more at this point than I did in Germany," Blatter said of South Africa's preparations. "There were still a lot of uncertainties in Germany four years before the World Cup there," he said. "Down there, they only have to build five stadiums and renovate one more. Four are already there." Blatter also dismissed fears of high levels of crime in South Africa. "There is crime everywhere around the world. But when you know where it is you can take the necessary precautions."   He also said transport infrastructure in the country should not pose problems. "They have a good infrastructure of technology, communications and transport," Blatter said. "Of course they don't have the same number of rails as in Europe. But they are improving and renovating their transport infrastructure." Yeah right. Pull the other one it has bells on it. |

Yeah right. Pull the other one it has bells on it. Which ever way it is I get the feeling at the moment that SA will not receive anything like the huge economic benefit they would hope to receive from tourism the World Cup would normally bring. |

At last we have someone that has actually been-there done-that and giving the feedback. Most of the times I offered warning to folks on this forum ( for example Miss Eek) they all of a sudden get nasty with you and seem to know a lot more than you about life in SA.
Have been saying that it was interesting that all these blah blah merchants (such as Miss Eek) just disappear and you never hear from them on the SA forum. I think is bad manners to come and ask people to give their input (and time) to offer guidance and not post back later on offering guidance to others. Kind of taker mentality so thought maybe they just never came back from Africa as they fit right in. I am currently in Cape Town, spending my last night at the Waterfront. I have had a great time in Cape Town and after travelling to many parts of the world, this will be one of the most memorable destinations. |

We still ( and many of our friends do too) love SA but it's not somewhere to live. Glad you had a nice holiday / bus trip. V & A is a nice place :D I guess our outlook changed when we became parents so we have other responsibilities now. Safe trip back to Dubai. |

I am happy for you. The Cape is one of the most exquisite places on the face of the earth. That country certainly leaves her mark on you, and she is hard to get out of the system - if ever. A huge part of my identity lies within that country and yet saying that, I shall never return. I had always hoped to retire there actually but sadly no longer an option. Too many very sad tales to tell. Anyway, safe travels and all that.
Back to sand dunes for me :( |

Re: Moving to SA
Hi Jenny,
George a is wonderful place to be. Actually a very popular holiday resort. Many people to to George when they retire. Work may be difficult to find, depending of course on what you find. If you need any other help please ask. If I don't know, I'll find out. Regards, Carol |
Re: Moving to SA
I'm amazed.
For the original poster on this thread: if you've been put off by the propaganda you've read on here, more fool you. I've been living in Cape Town for several years now and I love it. I have been burgled once, but then I was burgled back in the UK too. I feel completely safe here, as do my wife and my 11 month old son. I hear terrible stories, sure, but then I hear the same thing coming out of the council estates in the city I used to live in (in the UK) - my brother is a police officer there and he sees crime too - because yes - it happens everywhere. The comment that "you and your family would be moving targets here because of your colour" is misguided, misleading and racist beyond belief. Who allows that sort of comment to get posted on a public forum? What a disgrace. Sure, jobs can be difficult to come by, but this is in a country with a terrible past and up to 42% unemployment. What gives a comeover the right to just walk into a job anyway? I can't decide how many of the people posting on this thread are actually living in SA. I was surprised to see that the biggest voice of all that I've seen on the SA thread - doesn't. By all means voice your opinion, but why continue now - what's it to you? You made your choice, you left. To continue to run down this great place with your biased views picked up from reading the biased online newspapers (and, I bet, THAT website which proved to be a scam anyway) smacks of desperation to justify your decision. I keep seeing references to 2010. I can't wait. 200,000 people PER NIGHT in Cape Town, some of the most state-of-the-art sporting facilities in the world, stunning scenery, friendly people - it's going to be one HUGE party. Miss it - miss out. Don't believe everything you read on here. Or in the papers. After all, sadly, no-one wants to read about how Daisy went down to the shops and then came back with no incident whatsoever. But that's what happens 99.999% of the time here. It's sad that people have to make so much noise about the other 0.001% of the time. 6000 miles... |

I'm not saying don't come, but be careful taking a poster like 6000's advice to heart. Comments like why as an expat you dont deserve to "walk into a job" are at face value xenophobic. If you are suitably qualified, and there is a need for your skills - you should be able to get a job in SA. Wish it was that simple though, fact of the matter is (and people can argue this till they are blue in the fingers) if you are white (SAcan or otherwise) you will be be discriminated against. Feel free to argue "well its the turn of the blacks now, and you have to redress the injustices of the past". Great, if you are happy with that and can live with obvious double standards and clear racial discrimination, brother you are a better man than me. You will obviously read all of the posts here so make up your own mind, and depending on what you have to lose, perhaps you can err on the side of adventure and still come over. Good luck either way. PS my apologies for not following through on getting you info on complexes in George. I will phone a few mates there this week and get back to you. |
