Default Cars and licenses

I am a Canadian citizen here with my wife on a 2 year working permit.

Much to my dismay when we arrived we found out we could not get a SA driver's license. Because of our extensive travel over the years we currently hold Zambian (SADC) licences.

Questions:
What do we need to drive in SA? Zambian as it is part of SADC? I understand a DRC is acceptable if translated into English?

What do I need to buy a car? International or Zambian? Is DRC acceptable?

What do I need to insure a car? International or Zambian? Is DRC acceptable?

If anyone can answer these questions or point me to the right authority who can give me a definitive answer?

Hi Reggie, welcome to The Africa forums.

I don't know the specific answers but if you go to your local car dealership and ask to speak to the F&I (finance manager on the dealer floor) they will confirm what you need to buy and insure a car. I know that for finance they generally need SA residency / ID book. If you are paying cash, then they won't care. Insurance is trickier, but I use a very good broker who can probably help. PM me if you want their details.

Good luck. Be prepared for a long, hard fight and conflicting information from all sides. Don't even bother talking to the traffic departments. They are a bunch of useless ***** **** ******* ******

(goes to the kitchen to find his medication.....)
