I'd stick with CIMA too seeing as there is now a reciprocal agreement in place with CPA.

Well my oz exp is 1.5 yrs old now

My feeling is that if you are studying an accountancy qual outside Australia that is recognised in say the US,Europe then keep studying it. Maybe some reciprical agreement may occur. Maybe you might not like Australia.

The visa process could be 4 months, could be 18 months and who knows what legislation/MODL requirements will change.

My own experience with being ACCA in Oz was one of bewilderment at first. ACCA prides itself on being a worldwide qualification. But very few agencies had heard of it (even one agent who had worked in a Big 4 in London ).

It took me about 1.5 - 2 months to land a job, unfortunatly I got ill while jobhunting. But I still went for interviews, cash got tight before I found a job.

After joining the workforce, being ACCA didn't matter too much, some joking with other CPA's, ICAA's.

English is very important as it is the common language. I'm Irish and I was told to speak slowly more than once by co-workers. So if you are from a non-english speaking country - practice using english.

Software - I used Solution 6 and Great Plains. Standard Trial Balance and nominal producing software. Excel, Word, Powerpoint basically the usual stuff.

Work environment - I lived in Melbourne so Footy was the big thing Honestly picking a team and chatting about footy helps to break the ice. Plus being Irish I was able to talk about GAA (irish football) and its effects on Footy.
I worked with Irish, Aussies, Kiwis, English, Scots, Indians, Chinese, Singaporians, South Africans - you get the idea.

Yes it is trickier to get work in Oz now, I personally expect to be looking for a few months, therefore I will try to settle down first.

Bring a sizable bank balance with you, maybe budget for AU$300-AU$500 a week. Rent could be AU$100-AU$200 a week depending on location and whether you wish to share or live alone.

www.seek.com.au is a good site for jobhunting.

Thats all I can think of now.

Good Luck.

If you can rent for $100 - $200 a week without being in a multi share house you'll be very lucky!

True,

I was paying $150 a week for a room in North Melbourne, common kitchen and 3 bathrooms, my mate was paying $120 for a smaller room in the same house.

But I had better TV reception and the dvd player so he spent most of the time watching tv in my room. Should have charged him $30 a week "TV Rights"

We got lucky with our timeline!

Hardships in Brisbane, haven't really found any, although I would suggest anyone buying a second hand car checks out the legalities etc first.

Rentals are tight at the moment, lots of people applying for not too many houses although I expect that to change as less houses sell and more become available for rent. I found work pretty quickly, contract for 2 months initially, then got a permanent job while I was completing the contract. The market is slowing, but there are still jobs out there, although a lot of people want local experience rather than a fresh off the boat - I think it was only my merger experience that got me the job I'm in now to be honest.

OH took a bit longer to find a job, but he's rather specialised (not in accountancy) so I'm not particularly surprised.

I think the most difficult thing we've come across was the storm, but it taught us what we needed to have in the house to prepare for another. Its all live and learn, and its all a learning process. The people around here are fantastic, really nice and helpful. To be honest, its all good

Well, I work with 4 Aussies, 3 Kiwis, 1 from India, 1 chinese and 1 japanese..............and the accent they mostly find hardest to understand is mine

Melbourne office has a myriad of nationalities, we all get alone and understand each other fine. Australia has different accents same as any country, but having such a multi nationality population doesn't seem to cause any problems from what I can see so far.

Don't worry about your accent, and don't try and develop and Aussie accent deliberately - it most likely won't work!

Default Re: TIPS to GET Accountant JOB in Australia

What helped me I think was making the initial contact with the agencies (which I did about 3 months before we flew). Sent over my CV, got a bit of a relationship built up with them (no, not that sort of relationship ) and then it was just meeting someone I already knew from phone calls once we landed - they had an idea of my personality so knew which offices I'd fit into well, that kind of thing.

I had a contract job lined up to start as soon as I wanted to start work (ok, a week before I really wanted to start but you don't turn down a gift horse lets face it), had 2 interviews while I was in the contract role, didn't get one of them, but got the other. Its a slightly lower salary than I'd ideally like, but its only 20 minutes to work, and I like the job and the people, and to be honest that counts more to me.

You may well find you need to lower your expectations a little when you first land, especially now local experience counts for a lot and you may not be able to get quite as senior a role as you may feel you're suited for. If that is the case then just work on the basis of have an easy life for a year, then look to move on and up again.

As part of my survey I got replies from some fellow Indian accountants among 6

2 of them take long time to break the ice ( Local Exp)

Rest got even gud pay in short span of time mate 50-75K

It means that few percent of job seekers have to face the prob even in heaven too may be they wont sell them in right manner.

All we need

Get you degree ass by CPA or CA add it ur resume If possible Join in CPA or CA according to ur degree and their rules

Tailor your resume use oz action verbs

keep apply and followup with agents

Create social network or meet n number of job seekers and acheivers

If not going well do some voulnteer work at least for less pay or even Un paid

send cold letters to compant thru their career page

Put your resume in all job portal

Hope this enough to get a job any one have some view on this

Some Good response from a fellow mate - Accountant in a another form

Guys,
At the outset my apologies for not being very regular on the forum since I moved to Oz.
But you need to understand that the initial days can take a toll on you.

After a year I can say with confidence that this was the best move that I made for myself. Although I also had my share of difficulties during this period.

I have been reading a lot of posts some +ve and some -ve about Aus.

With my first hand experience I can tell you that it is all a game of probabilities and your individual circumstances. I have seen fellow indians doing well in sydney and strugling in adelaide and at the same time some doing well in Adelaide and struggling in Sydney. So there is no hard and fast rule for anything.

The only thing is that Sydney/Mel being the bigger cities have more options as most companies have their main offices in here and their regional offices in the other cities Bris/Ade/perth.

My work takes me to all these places so I can tell you with a lot of confidence that there are fellow indians in all these places who are doing very well.

However after the economic meltdown, things have changed a bit.
The unemployment rate is increasing (4% to 5.5%) in the last couple of months and this has put a lot of people looking for jobs. And for sure things do not look rosy for atleast next couple of years.

But also remember that most of the people who are losing their jobs are the bottom side of the pyramid and thus if you are skilled you still might have a good chance.

So my advice is that do your specific research in your field and then take a call on it.

I intend to be a bit more regular on this forum in future.
I will be more than happy to share any information if you like about anything. This forum has been pivotel for me in the past to make my decisions.
I think I owe this to it

Reply from an fellow
ust a query... me n my hubby r comin to NSW..AND WE ARE ON 176 (PR) VISA..WE DONT MIND STARTING OUR LIFE WITH ANY KINDA A JOB.. BE IT START FROM RESTAURANTS OR RETAIL OR CALL CENTRE ETC... HOWS THE WORK SCENARIO RIGHT AWAY? WATS THE BASIC PAY (MIN WAGE) FOR ANY BLUE COLLAR JOBS?? HOWS ACCOMODATION RATES? WE PREFER TO STAY A BIT AWAY FROM THE MAIN CITY...SO I GUESS THT CUD BE CHEAPER IN COMPARISON...

COULD U SHARE UR EMAIL..JUST IF I NEED SOME HELP WE CUD CONTACT U DIRECT RATHER THAN THE FOURUM.
Krishna - Let me answer some of your questions:
Its great that if you are open to work anywhere in the begining. That will really help as once you are mentally prepared for anything, then you dont get demotivated once you start doing this. Also remember there is dignity of labour in this country and no work is considered low.
Monetaryly one can sometimes earn more than doing casual jobs than being in a permanent job.
As you are moving to Sydney I am sure I can guide and help you in some way or the other as I know this city inside out now.

Regardind th job market it is definitely gone a bit tough after the global economic meltdown but still if you jump on to any of the job websites, you will fing a miilion jobs being posted. This gives me the confidence that if you are good, you can still make it as you need just 1 job out of those several available. But be prepared that the first one can take upto 3 - 4 months to get.

As for the salaries available let me give you the reality check.
People in the casual jobs (restaurants/call centres/retail sales staff etc etc) earn 15 - 25$ an hour or approx $35000 - $60000 a year. + COMMISSIONS if applicable (which can be anywhere betwen 25% to 50% of your salary)
People with permanent entry level jobs also make somewhat simmilar.

People with permanent middle level jobs can earn anything between $60K to $100K
Anyone above that level will earn betwen 100K - 150K

Accomodatio contributes max to your expenditure. Over the past 2 years the rentals have gone skyrocketing.
you can be looking at approx $250 - $300 per week for a 1BHK and $300 - $400 per week for a 2 BHK in some oof the good suburbs like Strathfield,Parramatta,Burwood, Concord, Lane Cove, etc. These places have an excellent connectivity to the entire sydney.
If one is a bachelor, then cheaper options (shared, PG, Hostels etc) are also available.
But I wont recommend them for families.
