[edit] Where To Find... A list of national or regional chains

Half a year in and it can still be difficult knowing where to find certain stuff, not to mention when you first arrive. Think that Metro PCS looks like a bank? It's a mobile phone store.

[edit] Equivalent Stores

First, some UK to US equivalents. Note that the US is so large that many chains don't cover the whole country, so you might not have one nearby. Please add any known chains - individual stores are unlikely to help the majority.

[edit] B&Q/Homebase (DIY)

  • Lowes
  • Home Depot

[edit] Asda/Tesco/Sainsburys (Supermarkets)

  • Walmart (food section is usually small)
  • Aldi
  • Kroger
  • Target (food section is usually small)
  • Trader Joe's
  • Kmart

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_supermarket_chains_in_the_United_States for much longer lists.

[edit] Halfords (Car/bike stuff)

  • Autozone
  • Pepboys

[edit] Boots/Lloyds (Chemists)

  • Walgreens
  • CVS
  • RiteAid

Some bigger supermarkets have their own pharmacies inside the store.

[edit] Debenhams/House of Fraser/John Lewis/Selfridges (Department Stores)

  • Macy's
  • JCPenny
  • Sears
  • Nordstrom
  • Saks 5th Avenue

[edit] Primark (Discount clothing)

  • Kohl's

[edit] Specific Categories

Sometimes it's not obvious where you can get, for example, a picture framed. Some places like Walmart and Target sell a little bit of everything so they're not worth mentioning - usually cheaper stuff that might not be good quality. You can get a whole bunch of different stuff on Amazon too, so that's not mentioned, except for British stuff as it's worth repeating.
