- In Quebec high school goes to the end of grade 11 (age 16).
- After high school, most students attend Collège d'enseignement général et professionnel (CÉGEP), which is like a two-year junior college. A graduate of CÉGEP has what amounts to grade 13.
- The French language laws do not apply to education at CEGEP level and beyond.
- Children of parents in Quebec on temporary permits can normally attend English language school. However, upon becoming permanent residents, they must transfer to either the French-language system. The alternative is to enrol in a private school that does not receive government funding.
- Unlike the rest of Canada, where bachelors’ degrees take four years to do, undergraduate degrees in Quebec take three years. However, when CÉGEP is combined with a three-year university degree, the student effectively has studied for the same amount of time as students elsewhere in Canada.
