[edit] Getting There

Miami's major airport is 'Miami International Airport' (IATA code: MIA); most major airlines have flights into this airport, including direct flights from London's Heathrow airport on Virgin Atlantic and British Airways. Most budget airlines fly into Ft. Lauderdale, which is about 1 hour away by car.

Miami is at the very southern end of Interstate 95 (I-95) which runs all the way up the Atlantic Coast.

Miami is also a stopover for many cruises heading to the Caribbean from ports such as Ft. Lauderdale (Port Everglades), and New York.

[edit] Things To Do

[edit] Tours

  • Everglades tours - There are many places along the Tamiami Trail where you can take a tour of the Everglades aboard an air boat.

[edit] Activities

  • There are plenty of activities (jet ski rentals, boat rentals, casino boats, disco boats etc.) available around the Miami Beach, Key Biscayne and Bay areas; these are mainly for tourists, so be prepared to pay tourist prices.

[edit] Shopping

  • South Beach - has plenty of shops covering everything from electronics to designer label clothes.
  • Bayside - is a small open-air mall sandwiched between Miami's downtown and the mariner; this has a lot smaller shops/boutiques and a few large chain shops.
  • Dolphin Mall and International Mall - are for some reason situated right next to each other; Dolphin is mainly outlet stores with a few larger chain stores, International has the large chain stores such as Macy's and JC Penny.

[edit] Dining Out

Being a tourist spot, there are plenty of restaurants all over Miami; if you have children and don't want to spend a lot of money, one of the larger chain restaurants is your best bet, if you want to be more adventurous try out one of the many Cuban restaurants in the suburbs (La Carreta is a Cuban themed chain restaurant).

The smaller, more specialised restaurants on Miami's South Beach offer better food, but with a suitably higher price tag; you'll find prices decrease the further from the actual beach you go.

The best restaurants are generally located in Coral Gables.

[edit] Entertainment

South Miami Beach
South Miami Beach

The main crowd puller in Miami is South Beach (South Miami Beach), which is full of bars full with tourists and nightclubs. I wouldn't recommend taking children there after dark.

The Jackie Gleason Theater is located on Miami beach; this venue hosts everything from traveling Broadway shows to stand-up comedians.

The new Carnival Center has recently opened.

[edit] Climate

Miami has a tropical climate; this consists of a hot and humid storm/wet season between June and November, a cooler period between November and March, before ramping up to extreme heat and humidity in time for the storm season.

Also, being on the Southern tip of Florida, Miami is susceptible to hurricanes during the storm season; you should check the latest hurricane information at the National Hurricane Center website if visiting during this time.

[edit] Avoid!

  • The area around Coconut Grove is a high crime area.
  • The area around the airport, especially to the East, North and Northeast.
  • The area around downtown.
