ViewsFort Myers, FLFrom WikiFort Myers, known as the City of Palms, is situated on the Southwest coast of Florida, It is 2 hours south of Tampa and one hour north of Naples. The city is also nicknamed the "Lightning Capital of the World". The summer storms can be spectacular visual shows. Fort Myers is best known, historically, as the winter home of Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone. The charitable organisation "Edison-Ford Estates" maintains the homes of those great businessmen. The homes are open to the public. Thomas Edison's botanical garden is maintained and around Christmas is illuminated. MacGregor Boulevard, which runs past the Edison & Ford homes, is lined with Royal Palms hence the city's nickname. These were originally planted by Thomas Edison. Fort Myers has it's own international airport (RSW), which has recently been expanded, although the only direct flights to Europe go to Frankfurt. Flights to the UK are all via Atlanta, Philadelphia, Newark etc. |
