ESL Schooling-Canada

From Wiki

  • In many school jurisdictions in Canada there are separate English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for children who arrive in an English-speaking part of Canada without profiency in English.

  • Typically the school board's admissions office will test a child in order to determine which grade will be the best fit for the child. If a child cannot speak English or if his/her grasp of English is too poor for him/her to cope in a "mainstream" class, he/she will be placed in an ESL class.

  • Later, when the child's fluency in English has improved, he/she will be moved to a "mainstream" class.

  • Schooling of non-English speaking children varies from one school jurisdiction to the next. It depends on the infrastructure of the local jurisdiction. For example, cities tend to have more facilities for ESL students than rural areas have.
