Durham, NC

From Wiki

Durham is in the Piedmont region of North Carolina and is part of the area of the state known as the Triangle. The other two cities that make up the Triangle are Raleigh and Chapel Hill.

Durham is both the name of a county and a city in North Carolina. The population of the city is approximately 198,000 (2003 estimate). Historically, Durham has been known as a Black American city. In the early 20th Century, Parrish Street in downtown Durham was known as Black Wall Street because of the number of black owned financial businesses on that street. e.g. N.C. Mutual Life Insurance Co., Mechanics and Farmers Bank.

The population as 2000 is 45.5% White and 43.8% Black or African American. The Latino population made 8.0% of the city's residents in 2000 but this percentage is certain to be higher by the time of the next census.

Today, Durham is known as the "City of Medicine" as there are six hospitals in the city. The most famous is Duke University Hospital and Medical Center, the medical establishment that is part of Duke University.

Durham is also home to two universities: Duke University (private), North Carolina Central University (part of UNC). NCCU is notable as one of the country's "historically black universities".
