[edit] Introduction
- Civil servants in the UK sometimes come to the BE forum and ask about their chances of equivalent employment in Canada.
- Generally speaking it is difficult for a British civil servant to find a job with a government department in Canada.
- A government entity in Canada usually gives preference to Canadian citizens and permanent residents (PRs).
- The federal (Canadian) government usually is very strict about awarding jobs to citizens and permanent residents (some jobs that a extremely sensitive are reserved for citizens only).
- Provincial governments usually give priority to citizens and PRs, but in the event of labour shortages will consider foreign workers.
- Municipal governments are the ones that are most open to hiring foreign workers, especially when there are labour shortages.
- At the time of this writing (July 2008), the City of Calgary has just recruited a number of bus drivers from the UK, for example.
- Some quasi-government organizations, such as hospitals, do hire foreign workers. Registered nurses, for example, are in great demand, and hospitals in various provinces have hired many of them from the UK.
- If you want to know about your occupation specifically, check out the Occupations-Canada section of the Wiki, as it may include an article about your occupation.
