[edit] Taking UK beds to Canada

Many expats who have taken their UK beds to Canada have reported that it has been worth it.

When their UK bedding has worn out, they have found that North American bedding works on UK mattresses. For example, North American twin-bed sheets work on UK single mattresses. Likewise, North American queen-sized sheets work on UK king-sized mattresses.

Because North American mattresses are a couple of inches wider than corresponding UK mattresses, Canadian fitted sheets do not fit snugly on UK mattresses. However, a more snug fit can be achieved if you use mattress clips that tighten the sheets' corners.

The better quality the bed, the more worthwhile it is to transport it overseas. Good quality furniture, which almost always is more expensive, continues to provide good service after being moved. Inexpensive furniture tends to hold up less well when it is moved. Notwithstanding the fact that IKEA furniture supposedly is designed to be dismantled and re-assembled, it tends to be the worse for wear after a couple of moves.

[edit] IKEA Sizes

UK-bought IKEA beds and bedding are continental European sizes, US/Canada-bought IKEA beds and bedding are North American sizes.

The bed linen that IKEA sells in Canada tends to be a nice quality.

[edit] Mattress Fumigation

Although used and second hand mattresses that are imported to Canada have to be fumigated, used mattresses that are being imported by new settlers and returning residents are exempt from this requirement.

If you want more information about this, please see the Wiki article called Mattress Fumigation.
