Bank of England banknotes

There are 4 Bank of England banknotes, with values of £5, £10, £20 & £50. As the value of the note increases so does the physical size.

The following notes are currently in circulation and are legal tender.

[edit] £5 Note

The current £5 note featuring Winston Churchill was introduced in September 2016. This is the first Bank of England banknote to be a 'plastic' or polymer banknote. It features a transparent panel. Both this new £5 note and the earlier one detailed below are legal tender and accepted anywhere in the UK until May 2017. Note that the new £5 note is slightly smaller than the old paper version.

This note will continue to be accepted anywhere in the UK until 5th May 2017. After this date, the old note can only be exchanged at Bank branches in the UK.

The current £10 note featuring Charles Darwin was introduced in November 2000.

The current £50 note featuring Matthew Boulton & James Watt was introduced March 2011.

[edit] Withdrawn Banknotes

The following notes are no longer legal tender and shops do not have to accept these. If you have any withdrawn banknotes when you return to the UK you can get these changed at most banks.
