Purely for info for any new arrivals in Bahrain

Once a year you are required to have your car registration renewed. Cars under 5 years old are exempt from the "stringent" test required for older cars.

Either way, here is the lowdown on what to do.

1. Rock up at the road traffic department with your car ownership card. You can apply 3 months before the expiry of your existing disc. Go early to mid month as the locals all rock up at the end of the month after they have been paid so that they can pay the fines !

2. As you enter the traffic department take the first right and head towards the covered inspection bays. If you have a new or new looking car then head to the right hand bay. The left is for older heaps.

3. The inspector will ask for your reg card and then fill in a few details on a sheet of paper. This is the same form that is used to register your car when you took ownership but will have a stamp on for the inspector.

4. Upon receiving the sheet, pull out of the bay and park up. This is easier if you rock up late afternoon.

5. Go back to right hand side of bay, taking your sheet with you and enter the office down the stairs. Join the line of people. Ignore the reception desk.

6. You will be asked for reg card and sheet and the officer will then check for speeding fines etc. These can be paid for with cards or cash. He must then stamp the sheet twice.

7. Before leaving check that you have 3 stamps on the sheet, one from the vehicle inspector and 2 from the fines office

8. Go and renew car insurance and take a photocopy of insurance card immediately

9. Head to nearest post office. Fill in all sections of the form and hand over reg card and insurance card. You will be asked to fill in your address on an envelope. You will then be asked for a road tax fee which is based on vehicle unladen weight. The range rover is in the 2500 - 5000 kg tax bracket and tax was 35 dinars for the year.

10. The post office will keep your fee, completed form and insurance card

11. Your new tax disc and insurance card will be returned in the envelope you filled in within the month.
