Immigration outreach officers will visit Armidale, Tamworth and Moree from March 25-27 to present information seminars on employer sponsored skilled migration options and to explain new laws that carry penalties and fines for employing or referring illegal workers.

A spokesman from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) said significant changes to the employer sponsored skilled visa program were introduced on 1 July 2012.

“These seminars will provide an overview of these changes, including information on SkillSelect, an online service connecting Australian employers with potential skilled migrants and streamlining of the pathway to permanent residence for people already working in Australia on temporary skilled 457 visas,” the spokesman said.

“Our officers will provide a range of information on temporary or permanent employer-sponsored visa options and the concessions available for regional applicants.”

The seminar will also cover the employer sanctions legislation which recently passed through the Senate. When the proposed new laws take effect, new non-fault based civil penalty provisions will apply where a person:

  • allows or refers an unlawful non-citizen to work, or
  • allows or refers a non-citizen to work in breach of a visa condition that limits or restricts work, but only where the breach occurs solely as a consequence of that employment/referral.
