However there is a huge amount of southerners migrating north as the price of houses are more affordable here and Brisbane is becoming more cosmopolitan.
We came from London and didn't want to live in a big city again, so we love it here. We just spent 4 days up at Hervey Bay where we went to Fraser Island and also went Whale watching where we saw so many whales..... it was awesome!!!
Why choose Melbourne??
I have had the salon for 3 yrs and the staffing issue has been a problem from the start
Today my 1st year app resigned because her parents have just separated and she is going to live with her father on the gold coast.
We also have a senior stylist, but she is on a working visa and under the visa restrictions I am only allowed to employ her for 3 mths. So it has been an on going problem. Especially as we are very busy and cannot grow as we cant find the staff
Anyway I must think positive, things will change
All the best

Hi Lisa,

I am thinking (very hard) about moving to Australia. I am a qualified hairdresser in the UK.
Please can you advise me on where I start.
My husband and myself are hoping to come to Australia on holiday in January.

Many Thanks
Jules

Hi jules
I would suggest going to Australia House and have a chat to the people there. Look on the internet at the main cities of Australia and decide what sort of climate you would feel happy living in. The southern cities have much colder and longer winters but hot dry summers. Whereas Brisbane and north are much milder in winter but very hot and humid in summer.
Then decide if you want live in a big busy city or something a bit more laid back.
We are from east london originally but didn't want to live anywhere like that again so we chose brisbane as we also like warmer weather. We love it here even though it does get a bit hot in summer, everywhere is airconditioned.
Hope this gives you a place to start.

Yes Ive got a load of family there so it makes sense to go to Melbourne. Im so worried about this TRA business though - I did write almost a Phd on hairdressing so that bit will be fine Im sure, but Im worried about my references as some of them were really detailed but some were just references so hopefully they wont reject me on that. Was your application really detailed?

hey hows things?

my statement of service and personal statement {detailing a self employed period} were detailed, then had some references off suppliers and customers. but must admit my specialist did make my employers write a lot of detail. for example jobs carried out on a daily basis, tools and equipment used and how i progressed whilst in their employment. but i wouldnt worry louise i dont think they have queried anything or contacted any of my employers or referees. well ive not asked any 1 but ive not heard owt either, so ill keep my fingers crossed for you im sure you will be fine. you must let me no as soon as you hear anything.

im going to london on monday for a meeting with mick {specialist} to start on the application. good eh ill keep you posted on that.

im getting excited though i must admit.

tata 4 now louise speak soon debxx

Congratulations on getting your visa, when are you heading off?
My visa application went in on 31st May and I received an acknowledgement yesterday. I got state sponsorship from Victoria so Im going on a 137 STNI visa. Hopefully it wont take too long, we are going to Melbourne so hope to be there by Christmas.
Good luck

hi louise, glad you replied.

im thinking of setting off september some time, Im travelling with a friend on a twelve month working visa. So initially we are going to travel and see as much as we can in the first year, I am hoping to get a feel of where i want to settle. Im looking to buy a salon somewhere so before i commit to that i really need to find somewhere i like.

So think we are flying to Adelaide and travelling round the coast to Melbourne, over to Tasmania, back to Sydney then right up to Brisbane!!! big trip!! then hopefully right accross the centre to Perth!!! wow im exhausted just thinking about it.... haha

dont no if we will succeed in this plan as it is a lot to cram in, also want to work as we are going around so we will probabaly get side tracked and distracted. Cant imagine how large Oz is, cant wait..

So with you being sponsered you have gone through a different process to me, it seems to be taking longer?? is it?? so will you have to work in Victoria for a set period of time then??

ok speak soon hopefully tata xx

[QUOTE=lisaxxx]Hi, I was interested to read your post about the state of Victoria sponsoring hairdressers. Do you know if this is a nationwide initiative? My salon is in Brisbane.
I have had a lot of trouble getting staff but am employing a great canadian hairdresser on a working/holiday visa at the moment. However, she would like to stay permanently and this may be an option for us to look into as currently I can only employ her for three months.

p.s anyone coming to Brisbane and looking for a job please contact me
Hi Lisa
I have had my TRA approved and am just waiting on the visa. At present I work full time as a senior stylist in an Aveda Spa salon and am level 3 qualified I am also in the middle of a teaching introductory course as I would to move into the training side more as I get older, I am 34 with a husband and 2 teenage boys. I would be looking at coming over nearer the end of the year could send a c.v. or is this too far in the future for you.
