Question Working in Melbourne as a hairdresser - whats the deal?

Im currently in the process of applying for a visa as a hairdresser and am planning to live in Melbourne when we arrive. We are doing our figures and where I can see that Hairdressers are in demand, I cannot find any details of scales of pay for hairdressers. Can anybody let me know how much I would expect to earn for a 20 hour week? and how much I need to be charging for a haircut etc.?

Any guidance greatly received

Louise

I was working as a casual and my pay award was $20.50 an hour, apparently that drops slighty if you have a permanent contract..
Like you say Jan, no tips... (unless you have an expat client.. )
I live in Perth also..

I dont have an agent - hopefully I can figure it out by using this forum and my head!!
Im dragging my husband and 3 children off to oz if they het me in. I am also seeking state sponsorship which the state of victoria will do if you are a hairdresser - has your agent suggested that? It means you dont have to pay the $5000 bond and your application is prioritised.
Anyway - good luck to you too, let me know how you get on

im applying for a skills visa, there are no stipulations on where or what u work as and no bond??? i dont no what yours is as ive not looked in2 that just gone on advice from my agent. he has made it a lot easier fo me i must admit. did you look in2 getting an agent? but u r already half way there if youve sent off ur TRA.maybe there would be no point at this stage now.

keep me posted though debx

Hi, I was interested to read your post about the state of Victoria sponsoring hairdressers. Do you know if this is a nationwide initiative? My salon is in Brisbane.
I have had a lot of trouble getting staff but am employing a great canadian hairdresser on a working/holiday visa at the moment. However, she would like to stay permanently and this may be an option for us to look into as currently I can only employ her for three months.

p.s anyone coming to Brisbane and looking for a job please contact me

Hope the staffing problem improves soon, the state sponsorship varies from state to state, you may wish to check your state.
