Technical Writer jobs in the UK

I'll be moving to England next Spring and will be eligible for work on a spousal visa. I've been looking around on Indeed.co.uk for technical writer/editor positions to get a feel for what's going on there. I've got decent qualifications (B.A./English, M.S./Education) and have 15+ years experience in aerospace and defense (mostly IT) and also have a Certified Internet Security Specialist Professional (CISSP) and ITIL Foundations certification. I'm currently working as an IT Security Specialist, but would rather return to technical writing. Are most jobs in this field short-term contracts? Much telecommuting (which I would love)? Will I be at a disadvantage being an American (even though I do know English spellings and how to use the UK spellcheck function on MS)?:D And how much ageism is there in the UK (I am on the downhill slide towards the big six-ohhhh noooooo...)
