I am a British qualified social worker and now have eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers - which you need to have to work as a sw in Oz. The whole process of gaining eligibility is not an easy one. Check out the AASW website at: www.aasw.asn.au
Basically you need a degree in sw and lots of experience and for most people you still need to convert your qualifications, luckily I didn't.
Charles Sturt Uni in NSW do bridging courses for overseas qualified sw's by distance learning. It is well worth checking out their site too. www.csu.edu.au/courses/ug/arts/bswork
Most British qualified sw's are diploma level qualified and are classed as welfare workers for immigration purposes and are allowed 60 points.
There are very few jobs for welfare workers and the pay is poor.
Canberra are currently recruiting sw's from the UK and are offering relocation expenses and sponsorship for those requiring visa's. Barnardo's in Sydney are dealing with applications. Their website is: www.socialworks.org.au
Good luck and let me know if you need anymore info.
