Mining Engineers??
My husbands a mining engineer and we're headed to Australia, we've already got our PR visas.
Just wondering where everyone is going and if there is any luck in the job hunting. We're coming for a month long vacation/job hunting trip in May but we could stay if he finds a job (already sold house).

Re: Mining Engineers??
I know Perth is booming but we're actually trying to avoid the fly in fly out situations if possible. We're going to try the Hunter Valley area in NSW first. If we don't have any luck there then we'll head to Perth.
Salary is not everything. We've arleady done 4 years in Canada in a crappy place with insane working hours (up to 100+ hours a week). So it would be nice if my husband could spend a little more time at home with our two little kids.
So if we need to we'll go to Perth. But we'll try other avenues first.

Hi
Adelaide and upper Queensland are also going off with regards to Mining... more than happy to put your details forward to some of my colleagues in those areas and see if we can get something going for you before you get here.
Look forward to hearing from you

I wish you could luck though. If you find out how to get your foot in the door let us know too!

Re: Mining Engineers??
I definitely can't offer any advise there. We're having enough difficulty and my husband is a mining engineer, which you would think would be easier since a mine is really the only place for him to work.

Re: Mining Engineers??
Just thought I'd give a quick update now that we've settled in a little bit.
On arrival my husband was in contact with a couple of recruiters. He has just recently got a job working for a mining company in Brisbane. It's strictly an office job doing mine planning, but we may move out towards the mine in a few years.
So we've got the job and settled into a rental while we look for a house. Good luck to everyone trying to get into a mining job.
I will suggest talking to a few of the contractors in the Hunter Valley like Thiess and Roche. You're more likely to get a job with a contractor initially.

Re: Mining Engineers??
There are employment agencies here in Mackay QLD that are always looking for welders. Mackay has no mining but support the mines west of here. Companies like Westhill Auschrome and others.

Hi
I am also a mining engineer with 18 years experience in opencut coal and wondered if you have any first hand experience you can pass on with regards to job hunting? Although there appears to be loads of work I cannot fathom why it seems so hard to get a job offer? I am looking for sponsorship so I suppose that works against me, but that aside I expected more positive responses than I have been getting to date.
Thanks

You can try contacting Nigel Long. He was my husbands recruiter. I'm not sure if he can help, but he may know of people that help sponsor employees. There was a company in Mount Isa that needed someone desperately so they might be able to sponsor you.
His email is: [email protected]
I'll do a little more digging and see what I can find out.
