Default advice for counsellor looking to move to usa/canada

Hi folks,

I don"t know if anyone can point me in the right direction. I finished an MA in Counselling last year in 2010 (after a BA in Counselling), and am currently building up my counselling hours volunteering a service in the nhs. I am very keen to practice in USA or Canada, but really don't know where to start looking at requirements or whether my qualifications will be transferable. Would be so grateful if someone could shove me in the right direction! Many many thanks, Laura

Hi, and welcome to BE.

Probably your first step is to figure out which visa you would be eligible for (if any). The US is notoriously difficult to immigrate to, but this will give you an overview of the available options.............. http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Pulaski's_Ways%3A_How_to_Live_and_Work_in_the_USA

And if you follow the link in my signature it'll take you to the equivalent for Canada.

It's probably also worth doing a search of both the main US and Canada forums for 'counsellor' or 'counselling', do to see if you can find any previous threads on the subject.

HTH a bit, good luck and maybe see you in the Canada forums.
