Default Introducing... UK man with US wife, considering a move to the US

Hi,

I thought I'd get in there and introduce myself.

I'm a UK citizen with an American wife, currently living in jolly old England. We're thinking of moving to the US next year, after my wife has gained UK citizenship (in case we want to return) and we've had a baby (5 months to go).

At the moment we're looking to move to either Austin or New Orleans. I'm a web designer and she will be looking to get into teaching.

I expect I'll be asking a lot more questions nearer the time but for now, Hi y'all.

Hello and welcome to BE.

Congratulations on the impending birth of your baby. I presume the little one will gain US citizenship through your wife. In which case him/her will need a US passport to enter the US.

We have several excellent US forums that I think will be very useful to you. Any questions you have about the immigration to the US or visas please post in the US Marriage Based Visa forum...our members who post in that forum will help you out with your questions. Before you begin posting please read through the stickied threads that are posted at the top of the forum's index page. I recommend you also like to take a look around the US Forums.

I also suggest you take a look in the BE Wiki...there's lots of info in there.

If you require any assistance finding your way around BE's many forums we have a team of concierges who will act as your tour guide...they will be pleased to help you. The concierge for the US forums is Kaffy Mintcake...please contact her if you need pointing in the right direction.

Any problems or concerns should be addressed to a mod or admin. The mods for the US Immigration forums are Noorah101, Bob and MsElui.

Please give me a shout if I can be of further help. I look forward to seeing you in the US forums. s

Welcome to BE and good luck!

Probably want to get the ball rolling now then if you're planning on moving around the new year as it's a slow process.

No idea what the teaching is like down there, but without experience etc, it'll not be easy.

New Orleans does have some decent tax breaks for media companies, so you might have luck getting into something large down there...but Austin certainly seems a pretty decent spot too

Thanks Jerseygirl, Bob.

The move would be about this time next year. My wife has teaching experience, just not a formal US qualification. She's the confident one (of finding a job), I'm a rather sceptical at this point.

I wasn't aware of the media tax breaks. I probably also need to look at freelancing / self employed.

Well she'll need to be state certified and these days most teachers need a masters to compete, so good luck to her!

As for freelancing, it's a bit of a mare, but not bad if your OH has a steady job taking care of the medical insurance.

The tax breaks in NO won't affect you as an individual, but it does attract large media and tech companies, reason why Transformers was done down there and that crap teen werewolf movie series moved there from Canada and another reason EA set up a QA studio in town.
