Hello,

I live on the small Atlantic Island of El Hierro, we are part of the Canarian Archipelago.

I am one of the five English people that live here. I am retired having worked for 50 years.

I first came to the Canary islands in 1962, at that time I was working on a Shell oil tanker, we delivered a cargo of oil from Trinidad to the port of Las Palmas de G.C. I liked the islands then and eventually retired here.

Excellent information can be found in the BE Wiki, not forgetting the Living and Moving Abroad forum that will help you, another set of great help is the permanent threads at the TOP of each forum, they are very pertinent to that particular forum and makes sensible reading.

Moderators deal with any problems that arise such as inappropriate posts, spammers etc, you will find their names at the bottom right hand side of each forum's index in bold font.

Wow you are the first person I know who lives in El Hierro !
I guess the most appropriate forum for you will be our Spain forum which you will find if you click the 'forum index' tab on the top left of this page. Scroll down the listed countries until you see one titles 'Europe', double click on Spain under that and you're in.
All the very best - and I am sure lots of folks would be interested in a few factors about living where you do. Well I certainly would anyways

El Hierro is the best kept secret in the Spanish territories. The island is 274 square Kilometres, 1501 metres in altitude, with 10,500 habitants, five of whom are English residents. We are 75 miles and 75 years away from the island of Tenerife.

Few tourists visit the island and because of this we have retained our Canarian charm and culture. The tourists that do visit are mainly from Iberian Spain and a few from northern Europe, they visit to partake in the world famous scuba diving and also walking on the many caminos reales, that traverse the island.

The scenery on this island is somewhat spectacular and diverse. From the pine forests high in the island, the walled fields lower, to the pineapple and banana plantations in the valley of El Golfo, not forgetting the most southerly town in Spain, La Restinga, where last year we had a volcanic eruption in Mar de las Calmas.

and where is a good place to stay which is clean but won;t break the bank?

There are three options for travelling.

From the Island of Tenerife, by air from the Northern Airport, Los Rodeos, 35 minutes flight.

Ferries from Los Cristianos, Tenerife. Armas 4 hours, Fred Olsen 2 1/2 hours

By air from Gran Canaria, 45 minutes.

Years ago when we visited, we used to stay in the Boomerang Apartments One in the Coastal Village of Tamaduste. The apartments have recently been re furbished. They are also on the photos that I took. The owner Fernando also has a Hotel Boomerang in Valverde. I have never stayed there, but am informed that it is clean but some what basic.

It all looks beautiful. Been to Lanzarote a couple of times but none of the other islands. I think the quiet would drive me mad but for a holiday it would be fab.:D

Quiet, not at this time of year, the locals are the friendliest people on the planet and just love to party.

Each village has its own Fiesta, the one in El Tamaduste has just finished, it started in July.

Eating drinking and talking about eating and drinking, appear to be the main pastime of Los Herreños.

But yes perfect for a holiday, we hardly ever have a winter.

Wow, it looks amazing! I've never heard of El Hierro but I'd love to visit once I am back in the UK. Putting it on my list for sure, thanks for sharing :thumbsup:
