Question Hi from a Canadian student, who is confused, but not lost

Hi!!

(The not lost part)
I know that this site is for ex Pats, but when I google looking for the information I need, this place keeps coming up. I have spent some time reading the post here, and I can say this is a very helpful and friendly site.

So I decided that I would come here and ask for help. Even if it is just pointing me in the correct direction, it has to be better then spending hours looking for a site that fits my "category" and one that is not full of very rude people.

A bit about me, and what I am looking for, this is the confusing part.
As my intro title says, I am a Canadian student (with the label mature attached), born and raised. I am looking for help on how to decode the information that is needed to apply for a Perspective Student Visa, and then a Student Visa for the UK.

You read correctly, this silly Canadian wants to go to the UK for schooling. Like they say, the grass is always greener..

I have a long list of questions about the whole process, but I will refrain from posting it, until I am given either permission to, and told where to in the forums. Or if someone would be ever so kind to point me in the correct direction that would be wonderful.

In the mean time, I will continue to read post, and try to decipher the UK rules and regulations myself :weep:

Happy New Year everyone, and I hope everyone ends up where they feel they belong.

To all the new Canadians, I welcome you.
Maybe with some luck,, come April, I will have some cheap winter wear for give away.
Just teasing, its wonderful.

I wish you all the best!!

~Eve

Have you loooked at the International Students section of the website of your prospective Uni?

uk-yankee is probably a more useful site than BE. (though there's probably some useful information in the Wiki and the stickies)

Also check at the Home Office website for visa info.

Hi Elvira, yes I checked the International students section, not much in it. Could be because it is a smaller college. The home office is what started my confusion.
I have not come across uk-yankee, will have a look for it. Thanks

No problem, I do a lot of work with UK Universities and they are very big on international students coming to study in the UK.

Good luck .

speshfesh I just noticed that you are in South Wales!! I am looking and hoping to get into either a university or for starters a college near Swansea. How are they for accepting mature students? I turned 40 this pass October, and I do not feel old, but seeing my age get no points sure made a difference. I feel like if I do not do this now, I could miss out on something I have had my heart set on for a very long time. All because of my age, my wasting time and saying "there is always next year".

I spent some more time looking at that site late last night, and it looks like it is set up to help international students from asian countries, but there was some helpful information on it non the less.

I just wish I could come across a site like this that deals with the issues of heading to the UK. But so far, the only ones I have come across have had some very rude posters and little helpful information. Or there has been no new post in months, sometimes years in a couple cases.

I also noticed your new poster thread, will stop by there in a second and say hi, I am in Canada, your roughly where I want to be, if you didnt have your heart set on the US I would suggest we just switch lives. lol

Again thank you, and hope that the New Year is being good to you and yours.

Hi Eve,

Yes, Swansea is not far from me (well 30 miles). Why Swansea? Have you considered Cardiff (good rep too). Also, there is UWIC (University of Wales in Cardiff) that has 3 or 4 campuses specialising in particular courses.
Another one would be the Univesity of Glamorgan (really big on international intake).
I think you're right, a lot of the sites seem to concentrate more on the Asian intake side. There are a huge number of Chinese students in the UK for instance.

Some more links that may be useful

Thank you so much for your help. I want to be close to Swansea area, because a friend has offered me really reasonable housing. So that would help me tons in the long run I am finding. I just wish I could get a solid idea from Canadas Student Loans and how much they would allot to me per year. But so far no luck, guess they get a ring in the morning. Hehee

Again, thank you for your help with this. I still have not found one forum like this for my situation.
