...they also offer all their staff health insurance including dental and vision, even part timers, close the doors on major holidays, and are considered to be one of the best retail employers (by US standards). That in itself makes it worth shopping there imho. Interestingly CostCo sells most items at a loss or breakeven price. They only make real money on the memberships.

We bought a couple of leather sofas from the store. After two guys had loaded them my husband tried to give them a tip. The said they are not allowed to accept tips as their salary more than covers helping customers with heavy/bulky items.

We were commenting on just this a couple of days ago -- we have seen the same staff at our local Costco for a decade+ and they are always unfailingly nice and give the impression they are very happy in their jobs.

I suspect that like car dealers Costco is getting rebates from suppliers, that don't figure directly in the "proceeds-cost = profit" equation. I also suspect that the commissions and kick-backs on travel and car sales aren't figured in the equation either.

America’s Best is always advertising two pairs of glasses and a free eye exam for $69.95.
I’m sure it would be unlikely you’d walk out with just that cost, but it could be a good place to start.

Weirdly enough, American's seem to love boots! I've had a number of visitors from the states ask to go there when in London!

Ive lost count how many times the Boots meal deal saved me for lunch. How I wish I could find the same deal in NYC for less than $5....yea right lol.

That must be a different US from the one I live in, because almost everything I buy is much cheaper in the US, and the choice in most stores is much greater.
