Visiting NY, places to stay?

Visiting NY, places to stay?
Sorry about the subject line -
I am looking for some advice on accommodation (visiting NY later this year). I don't know much about east coast but NYC hotels are expensive so would it be better to stay in Jersey or surrounds? Elizabeth, Jersey City, Meadowlands, Newark, Secaucus
I would like something around safe areas of Jersey city & not expensive..I know it's subjective but I am looking to spend money being out and about than a hotel where I will be just for the night sleep. Please suggest alternative areas - as I said, I know nothing about NY, NJ...
Cheers

OTOH, there've been times I've found the Waldorf Astoria with rooms for $60 a night, cheaper than the poxiest Hampton Inn in the area.

Re: Accommodation
You said NYC hotels are expensive. I pointed out that that isn't always the case and that one can sometimes reap unexpected rewards by checking the price at upscale hotels that you'd expect to be out of your price range...

If you want to visit New York City, it's better to stay in New York City. You'll only save a significant amount of money if you stay far away (and waste much time traveling back and forth), or stay in a dodgy area. There are some NY and NJ residents around here... a little more info about where you want to visit in NYC might help.

Re: Accommodation
Thanks - fair enough. I will check them out. Any suggestions "Elizabeth, Jersey City, Meadowlands, Newark, Secaucus" - again I was told to avoid newark.

Thanks Bob and prev poster.
I look forward to suggestions. For now - I am thinking Jersey City but as mentioned only because I was lead to believe the other side of Hudson can be expensive.

You can probably find something for around $200 if you look in Manhattan (at least that's what I found). It might be tough to find something for less, but I'm not an expert, just relaying what I found to be the case in December. Believe me, it's not hard to find places in the $400 range.

What's your budget? For under $150 a night you can get pretty decent accomodation in Manhattan these days, although be warned that your average Manhattan hotal room is about half the size of those in other cities, whether you're staying in a 4* or 2* hotel.
Also consider flying into Newark rather than JFK. Transit from Newark into Manhattan is far, far easier and quicker.

Re: Visiting NY, places to stay?
There's loads of old threads about places to stay and things to do in NYC. Also plenty of threads about how to get a hotel room for the best price...put Expedia/Price Line etc in the search engine.
