Default UK Residents hiring cars abroad

I know this was discussed in a thread a few months ago but the BBC has just posted an update regarding the demise of the DVLA license counterpart and the possible impact on car hire abroad.

Motorists warned about problems hiring cars abroad - BBC News

It seems to be the opinion of the majority of members here who responded to the last thread that the removal of this document is not an issue as it is not normally asked for anyway.

I hope you are right - given any UK governments record on getting IT systems right

Likely impact = "less confusion". Which other country has a two-part licence (outside the EO)?

Hired a car here many times on my UK license.

Not once did I need to produce the paper counterpart.

Whereas I have always had to produce it. Just shows how different the desk agents can be (or how they are trained). :-)

Ditto. Hired cars in Florida, Michigan, Georgia, Louisiana, Taxas, Akansas, and in Canada Probably more that I've forgotten. Not been asked for the paper part once.

Good to see it going tho. Less to carry "just in case"!

I got asked for the paper licence in Orlando last October.
The desks where this occurred (at the exit near a barrier) were certainly not prepared to have a queue of cars waiting or to review online checks

I have rented cars 5 different times this year in the USA and over the last 8 years this number increases to 30. Never once have I been asked to produce the paper part of my licence.

I rented a car several times last year in both Georgia and Tennessee and not once was I asked for the paper part. I think it would have totally confused them if I had given them it.
