I've been researching Jersey City recently for a friend planning a 6 month secondment, apartments and corporate rentals have an additional 6% tax on top of the rent. I don't know anything about schools in that area. To be honest I don't think it's somewhere I would have considered for myself when we relocated with a young family having been there 3 times in the last 30 days looking at 1 & 2 bed apartments.

That and zillow.com - which is under common ownership with trulia.com. There are others too, but many are cross-linked or aggregate content from other sites. ..... try searching BE for "padmapper" which seems to get recommended on every rental thread.

Brooklyn can be both great for families and tough on families. Three kids makes it interesting. I know a couple with two kids who live in park slope and they seem to end up moving apartment every six months when their landlord decides to sell their brownstone. Be prepared to walk everywhere and for small chores like food shopping to take three times as long and cost three times as much. Consider freshdirect or similar for grocery delivery. Lots of good farmers markets though.

Re moving so often, isn't it possible to get a 1 year rental to avoid this?

Oh yes of course then you end up moving every twelve months :-) I was just highlighting the bad luck my friends have had recently. When I lived in Prospect Heights we somehow managed to find the one decent landlord in the borough. Private landlords can be a bit sketchy.

Not a problem... wherever you wind up, enjoy it!
I grew up on Long Island, so pretty biased, but its a great place to be if youre a kid
Beaches, parks, pools and more. North Shore has hills so time for sledging as well when it snows.

This is $3500 p/m in Garden City, but you an search within the area (Carle Place, Westbury, Etc) as GC is VERY popular.
If you are interested in Nassau County you should stay clear from Hempstead and Freeport as the schools are a bit lacking and areas can be a bit rough...

I live in Westchester and am biased too, it's a great area for families with excellent links to the city and all the surrounding areas. I agree with Nutmegger the LIE is best avoided at all costs especially during the summer unless leaving your house at 3am!

If you're gonna go with Brooklyn look at Park Slope for the nicest bit and stay away from anywhere around Bed-Stuy and Williamsburg.
Jersey City is alright, but IIRC Long Island has some of the best schools around.
