Did you find that you had to manage a lot of other things yourself as well? As I'm being moved to the US payroll for a year they cannot pay directly into my student loan or pension plan. So that means having to calculate my salary to include any salary sacrifice and employee contributions so I can pay into my pension myself. This also means some more confusing national insurance / social security issues. As I'm employed by a US employer and residing in the US - I have to pay social security and medicare, around 8% of my salary on all income. It seems I can get this credited back 6 months before I retire... but also means that I may have 2 years (my assignment is over 2 fiscal years) that I don't have a qualifying year on my national insurance record. This alongside the fact that they haven't really got anything else in place is making me really re-consider accepting this assignment. It's been one thing after another.

In writing this I've realised this is quite a concern, I'll see about creating a separate thread to discuss it.

You may already know that you can make voluntary contributions to National Insurance in the UK to cover this gap. It would be an expense of course.
