Re: Transferring money
I like xoom - for the small amounts I transfer (40 quid a month to pay my credit card bill) it's cost effective and only takes a couple of hours.
I believe they offer referral bonuses, so if you do sign up you could do it via a member on here so that they get a bonus.

You should really make a sticky on this topic, it would save the question being asked a million times.

Re: Transferring money
I have used USFOREX.com multiple times for transferring major amounts back to the UK at very competitive rates. You have to submit some information beforehand as part of the registration process (regulatory related), however, once you are registered it is quite straightforward to make FX payments. Once you pay the USD funds to their US account - usually via a local wire transfer from your US account - quoting the reference they have given you on executing the fx deal, they will immediately pay your requested GBP amount direct to a designated UK account (I think they use the Faster Payment system for the local transfer of GBP funds). It literally happens very quickly. There is no fee for the USFOREX deal (it is included in the FX rate) - depending on where you hold your account, there may be a small fee charged by your bank to wire the USD funds to their account.
