In England I was an engineering cad design draftsman with 9 years drawing office experience qualified to HNC mech eng.....I am struggling to find a similar office technical job here in NC and that is making me stressed and unhappy....For the moment i've had to take any job and so i'm working on a process line with about 200 blacks and I can't tell a word they're saying - but it's a wage at least......
I keep sending off my resume to all the technical design job ads...but no replies....I feel as though my 9 years technical experience in England means nothing here in the US. Everything here in Raleigh NC is geared for US experience and US quals. The main avenue for technical jobs is nearly always through agencies who forward your resume on to their client.....I think they see my British experience and quals and throw the resume away. I feel if I could just get an interview I would be more succesful....I was very good at my job in England, very good using AutoCAD with loads of mech design experience of machinery......I know I could live with these US technical engineers here as I had to work closely with British design engineers qualified to Msc and I did okay working with them for 9 years - (if only they could be given a chance....)
other than my frustrating work situation...life is great out here in US.....much better than grimmy England

I suppose you've tried Boston? Nashua? Manchester?
Down this way, there's Atlanta of course. Jacksonville is supposed to be the fastest growing city in the southeast I think.
Charlotte?

Re: Are there any Expats happy in the US?
If you've got the experience, I don't see why it should hold you back. I was in the same frustrating boat, albiet in a different field, but the same thing was happening to me. Loads of resumes out, not a thing back. But then I started badgering people a lot more, phoning them up to see if they got the resume, actually going round to offices and knocking on doors to see if they had gotten it, so on and so forth. I actually got a pretty decent reception from a lot of people (with one or two asshole exceptions - but then again if thats what they are going to be like, why work for them anyway?).
I eventually got a job with a decent firm because I phoned them up chasing up my resume, got myself an interview and got in the door. The morale of my story is that because you are a foreigner, you've got to go that extra bit and push a bit more than you would in the UK. If you are doing all these things already, its definately the way forward. But don't expect people to come back on your resume alone, get in there and get face to face with the people.

Re: Are there any Expats happy in the US?
I live near DC and have over 20 years experience in the events/conventions/meeting/recreation/activities/product launch etc....industry.
There are over 3,000 Associations in the DC area most of them have a conventions organisor and I thought getting a job would be easy.
WRONG.
The problem is the salaries.
These jobs should be in the $50/$60 range, at least, but they tend to go for graduates, (by offering only $30,000) who know this is a stepping stone into the industry.
The graduates with limited experience then use event planning companies, and so many of the events/conventions are sub-contracted out therefore forcing up the cost of each event.
But what do I know ?

But I know what you mean, I'm always asking for feedback after a week, and if nothing else, I'll have a direct email and person contact for the next time I see them advertising...or to try later anyway

It seems to me that there are many who want to return home (be it after 1 year, 5 years or 10 years...).

My better half, Andrew is from the UK and we live in California. He's quite happy to stay in California and every time we come to England to visit, where we are now, he can't wait to get home to California. Yea, he calls it home. I on the other hand, have the same feelings about England... I guess with us, we're attracted to the place we know least. We'll see how long it goes for.

I am happy here, I love Tahoe in particular and No Cal. I have adjusted, adapted and settled here. Even though the marriage I moved for is in the can I plan to stay.
Of course there had to be a spanner in the works. In my case it's that I'm currently involved with someone in the UK (just HAD to happen when I lived here right?)
C'est la vie.
