Default Temporary agencies in New York City

Hello all,

I'm currently looking for a job in New York (having recently got work status) and have been drawing a really depressing blank when it comes to interim work - none of temping agencies I've applied to seem interested in registering me. This is partly due to steep competition and the old 'you're too qualified' problem, but I've also been told it's because I have no previous experience working at a New York/US company.

Any suggestions on agencies that might be a bit more open to a Brit working for them?

Many thanks,

Claire

Welcome to BE and good luck!

Thing is to network, it'll be your best way of finding something.

LinkedIn and joining any local work type associations and groups and just getting yourself out there.

Hi Claire

I spoke to loads of recruiters in new York in March and had positive feedback from all of them. What industry are you looking for in?

Have you looked on Craigslist and Monster? As for being overqualified. What is your work experience if you don't mind me asking. Have you thought about what type of company you are looking for? Have you contacted any companies directly instead of going throgh an agency?

My experience is in communications management and web editing and I've been applying for permanent positions in these roles through a number of job boards and directly.

I've had a few bites so far but am aware this may take some time to actually get a permanent job, so wanted to get working in the meantime by doing secretarial temping work. I've found it rather odd that none of the temping agencies, bar one, were willing to even register me as a temp.
