Default SSN number delay

Hi. I applied for a SSN in early August and I still haven't received a card. I was told at the SS Office that they was an admin problem because I have three names and that verification would have to take place in another office, I believe New York. It says on the letter I was given on the day that it would take around 4 weeks. I have rang the local SS office twice to be told that it still says pending.

Are long delays normal please? Also is there any way of expressing concern about the delay or hurrying things along? The local office just tells me the same thing that the application is pending.

Many thanks ☺️

Manual verifications and problems can take some time to resolve. My husband had to have manual verification done, and it took 6 weeks, plus a further 2 weeks for the card to arrive in the mail. So total time from application to receiving card was 8 weeks.

I think I was an exception. I got my SSN 2 days after I arrived in the US on a greencard. They gave me my number on a printout that was good to open a bank account. I got my actual card couple of weeks later.

Are they able to give you a temporary number?

An SSN is an SSN, full stop. There is no such thing as a "temporary SSN".

I was given mine on the phone but it was a good number...the original had got lost in the mail; so it was re-sent again by mail, but I was told it when I called to inquire.
