I am a UK citizen who relocated to the US last year and have first hand experience with HSBC bank. My main bank in the UK was HSBC, I had/still have an HSBC Advance account in the UK, when I landed in the US (San Jose - California) I visited the local HSBC branch in San Jose to open an account. I did not even have an SSN because I had just arrived and was still waiting for one, the staff at HSBC San Jose where very helpful and opened an HSBC Advance account for me here in the US.

I had to provide a letter from my employer confirming employment and my first US paycheck as well as proof of address and proof of ID and a copy of my visa.

I'm extremely glad I chose HSBC for the following reasons:
1) The UK/US HSBC accounts are linked so I can view my global balances and transfer money back and forth easily
2) I like to consolidate things and keep it simple, having HSBC as my main bank gives me less of a headache
3) HSBC US gave me a 10,000 credit card limit and this literally saved my life because the first 3 months in California where very expensive
4) HSBC US credit cards offer good incentives, they paid back nearly $1000 into my credit card as rewards for using their card on Amazon, etc.
5) I was able to get a 10,000 credit card yet I didn't even have much money in my HSBC UK account, less than 1 grand.
