Re: Rental shortage - options
Thanks Pulaski, you took the words straight out of my mouth!
Making sure our son is in a hig school that he's happy with and will continue to make progress in is our number 1 priority - as I suspect it is for the majority of people moving children across the Atlantic. Not that I need to justify our choice of high school to you, excpomea.
Thank you to everyone else who, as always, has given great advice.

We're looking at Century High School in Carroll County - Blue Ribbon school for a couple of years. We were really impressed when we looked round in April. Husband's office will be in Hunt Valley but we weren't impressed with any of the school's there or in Harford. He's happy to have a slightly longer commute for the days he's in the office so that our son can have a better mix of courses in a good school.
I don't know the area at all, so that might be the only school in the district thus all kids in the catchment can go there. However, where we live, moving into the catchment area for a school does not guarantee you will get a place at that school. You'll be guaranteed a place in the school district, but if the local one is full you'll be placed elsewhere.
Just something to keep in mind before you buy something only to find it doesn't get you what you want.

At this rate, we'll be pitching a tent on the football field!

The school is classed as 'open' and is being really helpful. They are already working through son's school records to sort out his credit and advising on any other evidence we need to get before we leave the UK.

Phyzz and Natasha, how much of the prep did you do from the UK in terms of talking to the banks or was it all when you arrived. We're keen to do what we can before the move.
The company will put us up in a hotel for a couple of months, but, guess what, there aren't any in the school district!

Springy6, we got a mortgage 6 months after arriving - we went through AIG Inbound (relocation package that we signed up for 1 year). They put us in touch with thh international dept at Wells Fargo. All our financial history was in french and they coped fine with it. We got a very competitive rate too. This was last year but we did have to put up a large deposit.
PM me if you want the guy's details at Wells Fargo, he told me he is OK with me handing out his contact details.

We were also housed in an out of district hotel while things were progressing (also as our furniture was still in transit too). The school district were still able to allow our children to attend as we had clear intention and purchase agreements in the district, but we did need to have proof of this intention and an agree that if we were not in-district within a certain time we would need to pay the tuition fees for the period. I understand that this is really dependent on the district, worth talking with them to see if they also have a policy that may enable them to start.

We did pretty much the same, but arranged through the company handling my relocation package. FHA mortgage with around 10% deposit. We had the same screening process for our credit records. with the added complexity of Danish accounts and trying to convince the woman conferenced in that she may need to speak a little slower to aid the process.
This was last year.
