REAL ID (again)

REAL ID (again)
The implementation date for this is coming closer: https://www.dhs.gov/real-id
For most States you're going to have to have REAL ID by October 2020 to get through TSA at the airport.
The reason I started the thread is because some States like California have started issuing IDs that say something like "not valid for federal purposes" on them, i.e. non-compliant IDs for the paranoid and unlawfully present and all kinds of weird things have happened in response.
REAL ID is only required for certain things, so bizarrely, USCIS has said the non-compliant IDs are okay for I-9 and ATF has said they're okay for filling in a Form 4473.
So basically, say you're a Mexican unlawfully present, this law does nothing because you can use your passport to get into a federal facility or onto a plane. The idea was to stop bombers like the 9/11 attack but how does it? So they couldn't get DLs, wow.
More random bureaucracy to make your life hard at the DMV.

Hardly any harder in NC. It's the same documents as you've always needed to present to get a driver's licence.

Re: REAL ID (again)
Well it has gotten generally harder, this is the list for REAL ID in Arizona: https://www.azdot.gov/docs/default-s....pdf?sfvrsn=12
This is the list for non-compliant ID: https://azdot.gov/docs/default-sourc...bs/96-0155.pdf
The list of acceptable documents is far longer for the non-compliant IDs.
But that wasn't the main point I was trying to make, what's happening is that States are issuing non-compliant IDs and putting stupid things like "not valid for Federal identification purposes" on them and people are taking that as an indication the person is unlawfully present. Which they might be, but if you look at those two lists I'm sure in many cases it's because they walk into the DMV and don't have the right documentation with them for REAL ID.
You can use military ID for example for the non-compliant ID or tribal ID.

Unless I'm missing something, I'm struggling to see the problem?

The problems are (a) the ID itself is misleading, various Federal agencies most certainly will accept them for Federal purposes and (b) you're basically carrying around something that a lot of people are using to discriminate against you, because they think you might be unlawfully present, but that's not necessarily the case. You might simply have shown up without all the bits of paperwork they wanted and gone with the non-compliant ID.
There was a thread on here about someone who showed up incorrectly in DHS SAVE, which does often happen to people who've immigrated, so you might decide rather than correcting the record and coming back, you go with the other form of ID - which then could be misinterpreted as you being illegally in the country by bozo X. There have already been cases of people getting called into ICE who show up with those IDs. Some Mexican carpenter showed one at a military checkpoint and ended up in removal proceedings.
So it could be a recipe for being hassled.

You're seriously overthinking this. If you are here legally then you've got nothing to worry about!
My NJ drivers license still says 'TEMP IMMGR STATUS' on it even though I'm a permanent resident now. Nobody who has looked at it (including TSA) cares. I don't intend to get it replaced until it expires.

NC says "limited term" if you're not a 10 year GC or citizen, regardless of REAL ID compliance.
Plenty of other things in this country and our lives to worry about.

If I was overthinking it, I wouldn't have seen guidance documents being issued by USCIS, ATF and the California DoJ on this subject. Clearly it's causing problems otherwise they wouldn't be bothered. I don't care personally, I'm Canadian.
