we pay around $20,000 per year in morris county, nj for a 3800sq ft property. we bought in july 09, and the whole town went through a reassessment "as a result of the economic slow down" which was completed by october 09...as a result of which, they reassessed us at almost $300,000 MORE than we paid for it just 2 months earlier (at a time when the property market was at near historic lows).

meeting with the assessor this afternoon to begin the appeal process

also "funny" how when we were buying, it was a nightmare getting an appraisal which came anywhere near high enough to go ahead with the mortgage...yet strangely, when it comes to tax collection, the town seems to value my house very highly.

perhaps i could sell it to them!

I have a 3-bed, 1420sq. ft. house in Louisiana. The property tax last year was about $850.

Does your neighbor's last name end in a vowel?

No. But the good news is I'll have no clue if you're correct or not.

i had my meeting with the town assessors today, and although it seemed to all go very positively, and they are going to "offer" me a new value, i won't know for 2-4 weeks until the letter comes through. then, if im still not happy, apparently i have until 1st may to launch a formal appeal to the county.

i'd like to think that's the end of it, but i'll believe it when i see it.
