There certainly is a value in one as an emergency type item, to be fair. Get yourself a cheapo prepaid T-mobile sim and phone (either on deal or off ebay) - you could quite easily be out the door for $30 or so with $10 of credit which'll last you a year.

1.99 at my corner gas station; not the cheapest (Costco is probably at 1.69 at this point) but that's a good indication of typical prices in the Bay Area. Not bad! I only hope this does not defuse the momentum towards energy conservation !

They are pretty inconvenient if you are having an affair, because you really don't have much excuse for not answering ("no coverage" is getting harder and harder to justify) ... other than that, they are pretty useful in an emergency ... what do you do if you have a flat? Driving the amount you do, what is your plan if you have a breakdown along the way?
