Re: Price of gas update...
2.68 yesterday at a small mom and pop station in a town about 75 miles west of Houston. The Shell Exxon and Valero on the highway intersection a mile away were all at 2.89

Prices are on the move again today, down another 2-7¢ since yesterday in my neck of the woods, which is putting most gas around $2.85-$2.87. A few of the discount brands are around 1¢-2¢/gal less.

In California, the major brands typically sell for about 20 cents per gallon above the independents. When I was in Northern Minnesota, my bother owned a rural grocery store/gas station and he would go to town everyday to check the prices on the pumps so he could set his prices to be the lowest. I asked him if he only checked the independents and he said no since all gas stations (independents or majors) were within 1-2 cents per gallon of each other and if the majors raised their price, nobody would buy their gas.

Obviously the other major oil companies, Shell, Exxon being the main players round here, have had to follow BP's lead. Consequently in any loose cluster of gas stations along a 2-3 mile stretch of road it is rare to find a spread of more than 2¢. Stations within sight of each other usuallly match prices exactly, even if one is a Shell/BP/Exxon, and another is Citgo/Hess/or retailer-brand e.g. Sheetz, Kangaroo etc.

Paid 99.9c yesterday thanks to Stop & Shop promo running this week. Looking forward to a month of these prices (points last for 30 days). It's incredible what you can spend serious money on at supermarkets!

It seems to be $2.83-$2.86 across the entire county today, I never remember the price of gas being as flat. It doesn't make any difference if it is a premium brand, a discount brand, or a retailer/no brand, the prices are all the same!
Unless there is more movement by the weekend I might as well buy at the local BP, rather than come off the interstate on the way past a neighboring town where the gas has been cheaper recently.
