Another reason Americans may not understand British humor is that names may be thrown around that Americans don't know. The name could be someone on BE, some fictitious character, or someone only a Brit would know. In the case of "Wilmore", I searched BE and although I found the name, there were no posts by that person and then I searched the internet and couldn't find anyone that seemed important so I assume he must be some imaginary character.
