Default For Consul Dean: New border controls could penalise Britons with dual nationality

From the daily telegraph
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/tr...tionality.html

Dean, as the representative of HMG what do you think of this? As a dual national, born in the UK, but recent holder of US citizenship, there is no reason why I would be prevented from entering the UK, correct?

It seems awfully complicated.....could you clarify the situation please?

thanks as always!

Call me stoooopid if you will but if you are a UK citizen with a US passport why not use the US passport for UK entry? There is no law requiring a British Citizen to enter the UK with the UK passport is there?

Because, respectfully, as a British citizen I will enter the UK as a British citizen, not as a yank.

Because you may be moving back. You may want to stay longer than a tourist would. Plus many other things.

As the article says, you need to use the passport that you booked your ticket with, whichever one you chose.

unless you are going to the UK for more than a six month trip though, it might be easier to use your US one, much easier getting back into US and no problem getting into the UK with a return ticket. Just because you have a US passport, doesn't mean you are a yank!

Interesting article that......however, my throwaway view is that it'll get sorted out as it affects a lot of people. Might (err...will, even) have some initial teething troubles with this and other issues, but I'm sure it'll be Ok in the end.

Than I guess you will need to deal with any hassles involved.

So when does all this come into affect? I'll be traveling in June, we do what most dual nationals do, leave US on US passports, enter UK on UK passports and vise verse.
What a mess it's going to be. I just see a whole load of British Ex-Pats sitting in a waiting room for some sort of secondary interview, so we should have some sort of code so we know when we see each other.

Fly in via another EU country. It's often cheaper anyway.

You still have to go through passport control on entry to the United Kingdom.

Flying to Dublin, driving to Belfast and flying again from there might be the work-around.

I was thinking you could switch to British in Evropa. Have to book your tickets separately, though.

Presumably it won't affect me if I avoid Britain -- as I usually do. I leave America as an American but usually heading to other EU countries, where I magically become a Brit before landing. So then I'm okay I suppose?

Stupid.

So if you have to use the passport you book the tickets with....what's the point of even having a UK passport?

How can a British Citizen possibly fall foul of immigration law, when one is not an immigrant?

The article seems to be written about naturalised British Citizens, not persons who were born in the UK.

Funny you should say that we are flying into Dublin for a Change and going to Wales on the Ferry. So we enter Ireland on US passports and UK on UK passports?
My kids are Brit by descent and one is naturalized.

I reckon the only way to properly circumvent the silly new law is to swim the last bit. It'll be raining when you get to Wales anyway, so five minutes from the beach nobody will be any the wiser.
