One option maybe to buy some that say suitable for vegetarians, that way you will know there are no meat products in them.

I make my own mince too. I have a jar from last year and wasn't sure if it would be safe to use. Reckon if I tip a load more brandy in and leave it a few weeks it'll be OK...? Everything's OK if you put more brandy in it, right?

If it doesn't look furry, if it passes a sniff test and if it tastes ok it should be fine. Extra booze stops it drying out and/or nasties developing on the crust. Otherwise it's self-preserving. Mine was 4 years old last Christmas and tasted delicious!
