This thread is both addictive and confusing. But I like it

I am confused because I always thought that I could travel too and from the UK on my British passport? I got my USC in 08', but haven't bothered getting a US passport yet. So, as a USC I need a US passport to get back into the US right?

You require by law a US passport, or authorized travel document, to both leave and enter the US. But the important one is getting back in.

The short answer: yes. As Lansbury pointed out, if you are a USC, then you are required by law to use this passport when entering or leaving the US.

A UK airline will want to see the passport before they will even allow you to board the plane back to the US, esp since you will not have to complete an ESTA and you can't use the VWP to enter the US. Your natz certificate is not sufficient proof for re-entry.
