Default How many British citizens in USA?

Can anyone tell me approximately how many UK/British citizens are currently resident in the USA?

Or if anyone knows a link to a website where I can find this information, I would be grateful.

Cheers all.

It's for a school project on immigration. I just thought that someone might know e.g. 50,000 people?

Its a lot, second only to mexicans I beleive. I have seen the statistic somewhere - you are shooting low at 50,000 I can tell you. I know of over 30 in my city alone (a city of 120,000). And if you have ever worked in Silicon Valley it is very difficult to anyone who is not either Indian or British (parts of Boston, NY are the same)

Do a search for the stats from the latest US census (2000?). That site's most likely to have the info. you're after.

Between 1820 and 1996 - 5,225,701 people had moved here from the UK

In the 1990 census it showed that

640,145 people who lived in the US where born in the UK

of those 322,342 where aliens and 317,803 had naturilised

In 1996 2,724,605 people visited from the UK (second only to Japan) and 74,645 came over on work visas (twice as many as the nearest country (Canada)). In 1996 10,224 brits where naturilized as USC (number 10).

Now if I can find this info in 2 minutes so can you, what are they teaching you?

Thanks very much Patrick. I had not thought of the census.

Default Re: How many British citizens in USA?

that's what the US Census Bureau is for

http://www.census.gov/

I don't know if I'm shooting close to what you're looking for with this page:

In http://www.census.gov/prod/2002pubs/p23-206.pdf it says 613,000 born in the UK of US foreign-born population in the year 2000 .. and wow, look at the number of those born in Mexico
7.8 million?

the number of UK born has been dropping steadily.. in 1930 the UK peaked at 3rd place in the list of top 10 leading countries of birth of the foreign born population at 1.4 million only to drop in 1960 to 833,000 .. 1970 to 686,000 .. 1980 669K .. 640K in 1990 From 3rd place to 7th.

before the UK entered the list and fell it looked like GB born popution was rising (379k in 1850 and 918k in 1880)

US population census July 1, 2002 was 287,973,924 so 613,000 is 0.21%

280million legal people live in USA and 0.5% roughly are UK refugees.

Hope this helps.

You were lucky, you wouldn't want to pass most of Patrick's comments on to your teacher!
