There is, sadly, a serious lack of cooperative spirit to do what is right for the people. Now the Supreme Court has given big business the same rights as individuals to promote political agendas. Things can only get worse.

American medicine has certainly been a really competitive price up to now. People (especially Canadians who have made it out before their own doctors kill them) flock here to use our value-for-money services.

You're missing (or ignoring ) my point. I honestly doubt that there's any spirit, cooperative or otherwise, among any of the bastards to do what might be right for the people.

It's not that I'm anti-government, more that I'd like to see some, in place of the festering cess pool of self interest that passes for it.

I'm a small businessman. One of my employee's has a a 25 year old slacker hipster kid? So I have to pay to support him? Sod that.

The middle class is going to get shafted over this. Just wait and see your costs go through the roof.

I'm surprised I haven't seen more people saying cut the Pentagon's budget.

Don't overlook the American obsession with not paying sufficient taxes to provide anything of meaning. That is why a system like that in France or some of the other European national health care plans would never fly here. The rich would cry about paying more (forget that they used to pay 75% or more above a certain level, and now??? Not so much) and the approximately 40% of tax filers who pay sweet **** all would go apoplectic. Not only do they pay **** all, they often get refundable tax credits in the thousands of dollars. And then head off to the tea party to whine and bitch.

I think there are some who have the spirit and willingness. Sadly they are vastly outnumbered by the ones who do not and are thwarted at every turn.

A lot of us liberals are with Ron Paul on defense cuts but the conservatives will scream and yell and say we are weak on defense. But with the troops being pulled out of Iraq by late summer, that will save about $100 billion per year.

Just because the republicans didn't fund the $500 billion in subsidies to insurance companies doesn't mean the democrats cannot use that same non-existent money when they cut those programs. After all, if the subsidies were not cut, the deficit would rise by $500 billion even if health care didn't pass.

I'm sure that when the democrats propose energy independence/clean energy they will find billions of dollars of unfunded subsidies to oil companies that they will also cut and use to fund their program.

France and Switzerland do indeed have models that seemingly would work well in the US.

Right, because at 16% of GDP, 45m uninsured, and countless others underinsured, the 'free market" has been oh so effective at controlling costs and getting universal access

You already indirectly pay especially if he, like millions of others, uses the emergency room as his access to healthcare. His uncollectible bills just add to the costs for everyone else.

According to this it's 23% of federal spending compared to 19% for Medicare/Medicaid. Throw in state spending, and I presume healthcare is at least as big as the military.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Militar...deral_spending

Having said that, why don't you ask the teabagging clowns whether we could cut the deficit (seemingly their priority) by cutting the military?

Well, clearly their inability to perform basic math is the result of socialised education

I'm not entirely kidding. The declining standards of literacy, numeracy and critical thinking, on both sides of the pond, fscking terrify me.

You are only talking about federal income tax which is only about 40% of the federal governments tax receipts and about 25% of all tax receipts (federal, state, and local).

Most of the richest Americans have their primary residence listed as in a state without income tax even though they spend most of their time out of that state. That way they do not have to pay state income tax on investments. Also taxes such as FICA, gas, import, property, etc.) have a very small effect on the rich as compared to the poor or the middle class. Therefore middle income taxpayers pay a significantly high percentage of their income in total taxes than the rich.

Funny listening (again) to right wing radio, talking about how difficult it will be to repeal (because people will like it)

Also the legal cases brewing seem to have an way out - by way of single payer, it will be a lot easier to bring single payer in, with the initial bill passed and arguments that you can not force people to buy something, so just turn it in to a tax.
