Default Haircut/barbers

Hi,
Been in New York for about a month now and need to get my hair cut.
Back home in the UK, I'd ask for a number 2 on the back and sides and cut a little longer on top. Is it the same in the US?
Also, is there any weird barbershop etiquette I should be aware of?
Thanks

Yup that's pretty much what I ask for and it's what I get. I usually tip around 10%.

I guess that depends on the cost of the cut. I go to Sports Clips near the office. The hair cut, hot towel, and shampoo is $16. I usually tip $4 to make it an even $20.

Yeah I'd round up to $20 when my local place charged $17, now it's $19 so I usually give $20-$22 depending on whether I have any singles.

The price of haircuts in the US seems very low, almost embarrassingly so. The woman who cuts my hair charges $12, which is what I was charged 12 years ago when I first moved to NC. I used to tip her $3, then $4, then for a couple of years I just gave her a $20 bill.

Now Mrs P and I go at the same time and Mrs P pays the whole bill, with a total tip of somewhere around $12-$15, depending on what mysterious processes and weird potions Mrs P subjects her hair to.

I paid for my first two haircuts after arriving in the US. Since then, my wife clippers my hair while I sit on our back porch.

I tip watching the kids while she goes for a massage.

Thanks for the info. Hopefully I won't come out with a mohawk or a tight perm...

Same numbers - I tend to have #3 though sometimes #2 in summer, all over. Around here you'd pay anything from $8 to $14 depending on the phase of the moon - in the same barber shop. AIUI many barbers are independent so they set their own prices hence the variation and (in some places) complete lack of "menu" with prices. I usually tip $2-$3.

They seem to spin you around a lot more here, dizzyingly so sometimes.

It's probably different for guys - but at the hairdressers 'round here - the juicier the gossip you can provide - the better your haircut

I get a grade 1 blended into a 2 up the back and sides, straight one in the summer with a mess of random hair on the top cut short.

In the local barbers, it's often been a bit shit as they're all military buzz top affairs.

Plenty of chain Super Cut type chains around that can be hit of miss and then proper salons.

Mens cut at the chains are around $14-18 and at a proper salon they're around $20-30.
