Seems an odd way to approach it though. If you don't want to post anymore, just stop or cut back. You don't need to vote yourself off... it isn't Big Brother.
It was a polite goodbye to people with whom he has been conversing for years.

When you go to dinner with some people, when it's time to go do you just walk out and slam the door, or do you say "thank you" and "goodbye"?

Posting on an online forum is a little different to going out to dinner, or at least it is when I go out to dinner. I’ve always found it a little strange when people announce they are leaving a forum.
