What sort of prices? We face similar starting out in NYC - I think the positive spin is downsizing means streamlining and dumping the junk 😀 Well that's the theory anyway.

I tried that argument with my wife when I was working either in the garage or out in the yard - she knew where I was and what I was doing, and I was easy to find, by opening the door into the garage or a short walk outside. She would have none of it.

At least 3000 USD per months . For me it is expensive especially I will not work intially . however I do agree that's is great chance for us to have a smaller house so we will not have too much clutter in the house .

If any consolation I'm looking at 1-bed in NYC for $5000 so I guess it is all relative.

And coming from a 3-bed semi with good gardens and off-road parking, it's going to be 'interesting'...

On a plus side American places seem good on closet space 😀

It depends on the house/flat - some are no bigger than a wardrobe, room enough for a rod to hang clothes, a shelf up top, and room for shoes at the bottom. One of our closets is 7ft wide and 12 feet long .... effectively a room bigger than any of the bedrooms I had at any point until I left my parents' home.

We brought over a 20 foot and a 40 foot shipping container. They held books, furniture (as we were using a container it saved buying new), kitchenware, our wedding present china & glassware, his crap, my crap, the kids' crap (but I was pretty ruthless with that!), a lathe, a honing machine, a cylindrical grinder, a laser cutter, more crap from our factory (including some of his late dad's crap), telescope parts etc etc. We bought the 20 foot container outright and it is being used as extra storage!

We also shipped over 2 101FC land rovers and spare parts in a 2nd 40 foot container.

And yes we did get rid of stuff in order to fit it into the space. Could we have ditched more? Almost certainly, but mostly the stuff that came over is useful. Did I leave stuff that I shouldn't have done? Almost certainly, but it is replaceable. Are we happy that we didn't get rid of everything? Definitely.

In essence, let him pack his stuff and bring it, especially if it keeps him happy, but make sure you bring your stuff too!

We haven't got that much stuff, at least not yet, but we do have stuff stacked in several closets, one bedroom, the bonus room, two double garages (leaving only room for one car), the walk-in crawlspace (cellar), on the concrete slab under the sun room, in a 10'×16' shed, and in a garage-sized rented storage unit.
